Srey Roth

Srey Roth* (not her real name) came to our SHE Rescue Home in January 2015 due to being sexually exploited in her village by a neighbour.

She was 12 years old when she arrived and due to experiencing such significant trauma, she was often self-harming and suicidal as a way to cope with the pain.

She attempted to kill herself by climbing a mango tree in the home and wanted to jump down. She spoke about jumping in front of a car on the busy Phnom Penh roads, and had also punched the mirror in the bathroom, as she hated herself when she saw her reflection.

She was full of self-loathing and did not want to live.

After a year in the SHE Rescue Home, Srey is now smiling and is very ambitious. She loves studying and wants to be an accountant when she grows up. Her counsellor continues to teach her about good touch and bad touch— sexual abuse that can be perpetrated by foreign men and relatives— and continues to learn ways to manage anger.

She is now teaching some of her SHE sisters how to cope better! She is no longer suicidal or self harming and is looking forward to completing school for a better future.
